Over the last two decades the science of range management, like many other resource disciplines, has embraced and integrated environmental concerns in the field, the laboratory, and policy. Rangeland Ecology and Management now brings this integrated approach to the classroom in a thoroughly researched, comprehensive, and readable text. The authors discuss the basics of rangeland management—including grazing and practical management of animals and vegetation—and place those basics within the context of decision making for damaged land, riparian and water conservation, multiple use, and modeling. Concepts such as succession, stability, and range condition are examined and their effects discussed. Fire is considered as an environmental factor. Appendixes provide scientific and common names of range plants and animals. These and many other issues crucial to the understanding of successful range management combine to make the finest text for upper-level undergraduates now available.

Review
"A timely treatment of grazing ecology, grazing management, and vegetation resource management." -- -J. L. Schuster, Texas A&M University

"A timely treatment of grazing ecology, grazing management, and vegetation resource management. It brings together a great span of information useful for multiple use management of rangeland worldwide. It would be a valuable addition to any natural resource manager's library and serve well as a text in range management." -- J. L. Schuster, Texas A&M University

"An important reference and source of information and inspiration for rangeland managers, rangeland scientists, and grazing ecologists throughout the academic and applied communities." -- Michael D. Pitt, University of British Columbia

"Range science is universal in its principles but the daily use of these principles is contingent upon local situations, in particular socioeconomic conditions. The present textbook differs from most similar books produced in the United States, as it takes some examples from outside North America, in particular from Africa and other tropical zones. If the present book is not yet a world-wide textbook in its perspectives, it is a good first step toward this aim." -- Henry Noel Hourou, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Montpellier, France

"The impressive breadth of topics, historical context, and objective consideration of cultural values. I strongly recommend this book." -- -Mitchel McClaran, University of Arizona at Tucson

"The impressive breadth of topics, historical context, and objective consideration of cultural values. I strongly recommend this book for introductory range management courses at the college level, for graduate courses on selected topics in range ecology, as a reference for practicing natural resource managers, and as an essential addition to the library of all range management faculty." -- Mitchel McClaran, University of Arizona at Tucson

"This book is a classical rangeland management textbook of considerable value to teaching professionals." -- -Ecology
