The title says “Better Embedded System Software,” but the concepts and principles I feel far extend beyond just embedded software!I bought this as a required text for my study in engineering professionalism, but I very quickly discovered its value in the workplace.The book itself is organized to be an easy cover to cover read as well as a quick reference guid for on-the-go. For each topic discussed in the book, a list of reasons, pros, cons, and tips are provided to help clarify and better implement each concept into a project’s workflow. Concepts can be easily applied to agile, waterfall, or other workflows.I recommend this book along with the Gang of Four’s “Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software” for the software engineer’s and project manager’s library!

Having worked in level A software for nearly 20 years, there's not much really new here, but I can closely identify with the words of wisdom within. It certainly is accessible and understandable for newbie and seasoned alike. I recommend this as a solid "words of wisdom" reference for the discipline.

I am proficient in high level application software engineering practices and was looking for application of some good practices used extensively by high level application software community such as OOAD(Object Oriented Analysis & Design) especially data hiding and encapsulation, low coupling and high cohesion based partitioning for top level modules, useful UML modelling based best practices etc. that can be applied in Embedded Software as well. I got recommendations on this for embedded software in this book in a concise & clear manner. Hence here is a book I strongly recommend if you want to learn the technique and best practices of doing the architecture & design before coding. If you believe that architecting and designing is secondary to coding, then this is a wrong book for you. For OOAD, low coupling and high cohesion based modules & partitioning refer to chapter 11 modularity, useful UML modelling based best practices refer to Chapter 10 Software Architecture & Chapter 13 Statecharts and modes. The requirements analysis and capturing part (chapters 5 to 9) is also very good that is even useful for high level application software community. Chapter 6 Measurable Requirements is best among the requirements chapters which I strongly recommend as well if you want your development project to succeed as per business objectives. "How much Paper is too much ?" is a great tip for youngsters who are averse to recording the design before coding. I'm a professional embedded software engineer and an university teacher in São Paulo, SP, Brazil and decided to adopt Better Embedded System Software (BESS) as a reference for an embedded system course I'm lecturing.One of the greatest strengths of the book is the format used to present the material and the fact each chapter is short, to the point and (almost) self contained, with cross-references to additional material both in the net and in printed form. This makes BESS ideal to have around and flip its pages every now and then. There are no list of exercises at the end of each chapter, and its pointless to have them, for the book had in mind the practicing embedded software engineer.The other strength of the book is the author: Professor Koopman knows its subject by the heart and enjoys sharing his knowledge with the readers and to help them memorize the lessons learned, boxed text are strategically placed after each carefully pondered point. Besides, his writing style is just like BESS: down-to-earth, to the point, making the reading experience engaging and definitely proving that technical writing does not need to be boring.The book coverage is broad, but not exaustive. One may regret some omissions and gaps: for example, integration issues should have a more complete discussion than the brief mentions interspesed in the text. But, this only attests the author had to make some difficult choices during the selection process.Only time will tell whether BESS is going to become an influential work, one of the classics of the field, but, that doesn't matter. BESS is an entertaining, terrific reading experience and a much needed addition to the embedded system software literature.

Great read for anyone that already have basic knowledge about embedded system development and want to take their skill to the next level.

The difference between your nightmare and theirs is that there was no awakening for them- theirs was real. They lost their ship during Antarctic expedition, named "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition."Before the expedition, Shackleton named the ship "Endurance" from his family motto, "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer). If you didn’t know about them, while reading this book, you will feel as though you are their stowaway crew member, having survived along with them on their unexpected 17-month-long journey and be awed at how so did theyAt times, I slowed down and carefully read with wrinkles between my eyes with much concern for the crew members' well-being. I was worried something horrific might come upon the crew when they run out of food, water; some fell off the boat; many had frostbite; and one had gangrene on his toes from severe frostbite. At other times, I burst out laughing loudly at funny jokes that they made each other, and positive mindset, despite their grim ordeal.Shackleton's leadership could be a matter of interest to you. He showed countless courageous leadership decisions and sacrifices for his crew throughout the journey. Had it not been for his innate leadership, I am certain the rest of 27 men would not have seen their family ever again. On voyage, they would toast by saying "For our wives and children. May they never meet." Then did they not have a slightest inkling on how Shackleton would lead them from the grasp of death in the coming months.

What a page turner. Lansing is a master for the description of those explorers hardships, desire to follow Shacketon' orders. I kept saying to myself that there are few humans today that are as tough as those men. I recommend this book to add to the collection of those books that give us the knowledge of what it takes to conquer a goal.

The greatest adventure story of all time. Simply amazing. Purchase the hardcover 100th anniversary edition, that was just published.The actual photographs of the Endurance stuck in the ice are worth the price of the new edition. I have read this book several times overthe years and it never fails to excite.

I do not want to say anything that might diminish this incredible story or the heroism of all the men involved. But, this should have been a short story and not a full blown novel. There is not one moment of levity in the entire book. It is simply tension at a high level for page after page after page. There is only so much snow, ice, freezing water, freezing temperatures, waves, ice pack, ice pressure, wind, hopeless, etc., etc., etc. that a person can take. After a while it all becomes somewhat of a blur and is boring, especially when you know how the story ends. I only wanted to finish the book and move on to something more interesting. If that kind of book is what you are looking for, then you will love this book. It really is an incredible story and it is a story well told.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on an expedition to make the first land crossing of the barren Antarctic continent from the east to the west coast. The expedition failed to accomplish its objective, but became recognized instead as an amazing feat of endurance. Shackleton and a crew of 27 (plus one stowaway) first headed to the Weddell Sea on the ship Endurance. Their ship was trapped by pack ice short of their destination and eventually crushed. Forced to abandon ship, the men were trapped on ice floes for months while they drifted north. Once they were far enough north that the ice thinned somewhat, they were forced to journey in lifeboats they'd dragged off the ship. After six terrible days, they made it to uninhabited Elephant Island; from there Shackleton and five other men set off in an open 22-foot boat on an incredible 800-mile voyage across the notoriously tempestuous Drake Passage to South Georgia Island, where they hiked across the island’s mountain range to reach a whaling camp. From there, they returned in a ship to rescue the men left behind on Elephant Island.That these men were able to survive in the harsh, barren conditions of Antarctica, where temperatures frequently fell below zero is amazing. It’s nearly unimaginable that these men could survive for almost two years, their lives marked by a seemingly endless stretch of misery, suffering, and boredom, not to mention the threat of starvation. At every turn, their situation seems to go from bad to worse. If this were a work of fiction, one would be inclined to claim the story was simply too far-fetched. But Endurance isn't just a tale of misery, it is a vivid description of their journey, the dangers they faced, and the obstacles they overcame. Through all of this, Shackleton has never lost a man.Alfred Lansing's book, written in 1958 from interviews and journals of the survivors, is now back in print. It’s a riveting tale of adventure, survival and hope. It is also a rare historical, non-fiction book that is as exciting as any novel. I’ve read a number of stories of survival and would rate this as the best of all I have read. This is one of the great adventure stories of our time. Don’t miss it.
